The cold-process method is one of the most traditional ways of making soaps. Come learn about soap making and share the joy of creating soaps for your whole family to use.

Basic calculations and formula will be shared, as well as introduction on ingredients, tools and equipments, and tips.
Participants will learn to make their own soap mould and about 600g of soap, which they can take home to cut afterwards.

May Class : Book Binding (Part 1)

Holding a well-made handbound book is a rare and rewarding experience, especially when you have made it yourself. In this course, learn how to produce a beginning level Coptic-bound book.

Coptic binding was developed in Egypt by the early Christians known as Copts and used from the 2nd through the 11th centuries. In this style of binding, the book sections are sewn through the fold and attached to each other with link stitches. The spine is exposed, creating a decorative element.

Students are guided through the book construction process from start to finish. They also explore various binding materials, such as handmade papers and creative cover choices.

This non-adhesive binding technique can be easily replicated at home.

Shared tools and some supplies are provided. A list of additional materials is mailed prior to the start of class.

The cold-process method is one of the most traditional ways of making soaps. Come learn about soap making and share the joy of creating soaps for your whole family to use.

Basic calculations and formulae will be shared, as well as introduction on ingredients, tools and equipments, and tips.

You may not have heard of Egg Yolk soap before. And you will wonder why egg yolks? Why not? Yes...you can make soap with eggs in it! The idea behind them is that they add a rich, moisturizing quality to the soap.

You also get to play around with essential oils, or additives to make your own unique soap bars.

Participants will learn to make their own soap mould and about 600g of soap, which they can take home to cut afterwards.

Handmade Household Soap Review!

Sorry I've been slow in updating!

I've been very tired with so many things to handle so I'm in the midst of updating The Handmade Movement to be a more efficient and friendly site for all our beloved crafters and hopefully i'll be able to focus on other things when I have this settled!

As for our Handmade Household Soap class last week, it'd been quite a hectic one!

First our electricity supply doesn't seems to be working great on the day and it keeps cutting off in the middle of the class! And then Patty's weighing machine decided to quit at the middle of the class as well and I had to run under the rain to get a new one! We must have been quite unlucky that day!

But thank you to Patty and all the lovely students for being understanding and not blasting out at us! We're improving our center, and have everything look out now so hopefully your next experience with us will be a good one!

Holding a well-made handbound book is a rare and rewarding experience, especially when you have made it yourself. In this course, learn how to produce a beginning level Coptic-bound book.

Students are guided through the book construction process from start to finish. They also explore various binding materials, such as handmade papers and creative cover choices.

This non-adhesive binding technique can be easily replicated at home.

Our first class had finally kick off last Saturday!

Thanks to Tini and all of the attendees, it was a really exciting day! I only took couple of photos but I'm so glad that all 12 students attended the class and that Tini was a really awesome teacher.

Some of the students came all the way from Seremban and Kelantan, all gathered for the same passion!

Handmade!

Although most of them couldn't finish their handmade product at the end of the class, they were still very happy with the class and I'm sure they will proceed to finish their very own handmade Felt T-Shirt by themselves!

With the first class started off, I see many ways on improving our handmade movement and to make it more convenient for all participants, there are endless possibilities and I'm very excited about that.

We even had a couple of students that came for the wrong class (oops! Sorry if I confused you with the dates!) and I wish to say my sorry here! I'll be hoping to meet you again soon!^^

Thanks again to Tini and all of you that had attended! I can't wait for all the other class to start and to meet everyone of you that have the same passion as I do!

I've been receiving quite a good response from vendors that are looking forward to join us!

Currently there are 4 paid vendors and quite alot who haven't manage to book their booth but whom are very interested in joining us!

I thank you for taking interest in joining us and making this bazaar big!

"Do you know that dishwashing water from your house contributes to ocean pollution?
If everyone of us takes a little more care, we can keep our oceans clean and blue. So lets start by
making your own household soap!

You and your whole family will appreciate the switch to these natural soaps!
You'll be so amazed by how well your handmade products clean and how great they smell that
you'll never use synthetic commercial cleaning products again.

Participants will learn to make their own soap mould and about 800g of soap, which they

About The Handmade Movement

SUMMARY

The summary of this project is that we find talented crafters that are willing to share their experiences and skills with the rest of the world. These talented crafters will decide on the craft projects for a short class of 3 hours and also whatever fees they want to charge.

The only fees charged from their classes are for the space rental and electric bills which is a fixed amount of RM5 per student. No hidden fees!

I'll then promote this handmade movement in different websites and the help of fellow crafters and find interested fellow crafters that are looking to learn and experience new crafts. The class will go on as long as there are 3 to maximum 15 students.

I will not be earning a single cent from this handmade movement, I only do this because I have the passion for it and am very excited of the endless possibilities!

Conducting Classes

To conduct a class, please take note that we will need a secure booking payment of RM100 for your commitment. We cannot afford for you not to turn up on that day when all your students are ready to go, However the RM100 will be refund to you at the end of your class.

I am hoping to turn every Saturday into a handmade movement day , but because we just started there might be some Saturdays that we'll be close if there's no classes on. I'll be making a new blog for The Handmade Movement which will let you check out the schedule for upcoming classes.

You are also free to promote your website/ shop and sell your items on the day you are conducting your class, we'll prepare tables for you to display and arrangement can be made earlier to fully utilize the space.

Date : Any Saturdays, preferrably book classes for February first to get things going!

How to Conduct A Class?

Before we start, read through the Q&A to understand more before proceeding to conduct a class with us!

1. Why conduct a class through The Handmade Movement?

Save the money, time and trouble in finding a venue because we have it ready for you! All you need to do is to provide us with your class details (kindly follow form procedure in doing so!) and we'll even promote the class for you!

2. When can I conduct a class?

Starting June 2011, we are open on every Saturday from 3-6pm. For every Saturday there will be 2 classes going on, for detailed schedule kindly email us to discuss!

3. What is the fees to open a class?

Your class fees is entirely up to you. However please keep in mind the difficulty level of your craft class and not mark up your class fees way to high.

Keep in mind that your class fees for every student should include 15% commission for The Handmade Movement and also material fees that you will need to purchase for your students. If you have doubt in the calculation of your class fees, feel free to drop us an email.

4. How long can my class be?

We only accept short classes now. Which means one class takes up to 3 hours and not any longer.Your craft project needs to be done within the 3 hour.We are aiming to introduce different crafts to the crowd. However this might change in the future when the crowd are ready for a bigger commitment.

5. What crafts can I teach?

We believe handmade craft is a really fun thing with no boundaries. It doesn't have a certain formula to it so don't shy away from sharing your wonderful skills with the rest! Anything from easy felt art to rubber stamp carving to soap making or even baking classes are welcome, and particularly anything that is made with our own hands are most welcome!

6. Do I need to prepare the materials?

It is best if you can do so to ensure the students have a relaxing and enjoyable class, remember to charge the materials fees into your total fees as well!

If this is not possible, please note down in email when you are submitting your class details. This is to prevent misunderstanding that the materials are provided free from the teachers.

7. Can I showcase/sell my products there?

Yes, you can showcase and sell your products and the raw material used in your project on your class day ONLY. Please notice that we are not a handmade shop so we will not help to sell your products before or after your class in our centre.

However, we now welcome our teachers to showcase their future class project in our space. This is to promote your class and have more students sign up.

8. I can only speak in Mandarin/ English/ Malay...

Let us know in advance and we'll promote your class with that in mind!If you can conduct a class in more than one language, let us know too! This will help increase your students population!

9. How many students should I have to be able to open a class?

At the moment, the minimum number of students is 4 person. As long as we have 4 person registered into your class, we'll go on with the class. Maximum class capacity is 12 person, but if you need a longer one to one time with each student, it will be best to let us know your limit.

All students must also register through us, so if you have friends who are interested in joining your class, please direct them to us!

10. How do we settle the payment?
At the moment, every student have to register under us by emailing us at thehandmademovement@gmail.com

We will do the registration , collect the advance fees and also settling all the registration details for you. This is how we will settle the payment with you :-

Advance Payment : We will be collecting a small amount of deposit from your students to confirm their seats, however this will not be given to you in advance to protect our rights in the case of the teacher absentee and will only be handed to you with final payment after your class.

In any case that a student is absent from class, this advance payment will be made to you for the materials you've bought for them. RM5 will be deducted for The Handmade Movement for admin fees instead of 15% when in the case of absentee.

Final Payment : This fees will be collected on the class day from students and added with the advance payment to be passed to you. We'll do the calculating and the 15% from each student will be deducted before we pass the rest to you. We might make mistakes in calculation at times, so do double calculate and let us know if there are doubts!

11. How do I start?

Now that you're ready to start, make sure you have done your class project numerous times and am confident in it! Email us the form below and remember to include 3 photos of the final product of your class so we can promote it! (submitting form without photos will not be confirmed)

Some of the details that you would like to know before starting is that...

Different classes are conducted by different teachers. We will always include the teacher name and website (if any) beside the class title for easy reference.
All classes require you to pay an advance fee that is not refundable if you don't turn up on the class day. This is because most of the classes provide their students with materials needed.
Different classes have different class fee. This might varies because of the difficulty level of a class and the fees for materials as well.
Please double check the class date and time to make sure you can attend them to avoid any misunderstanding!
